Written and Directed by Morten Savage

SHORT SYNOPSIS:

Circles tells the story of August, a frail and helpless 18 year old with no loving family to speak of, who finds himself in a wilderness rehabilitation program in the Appalachian mountains. This is his chance to put away his past, find some self-respect, and make his way in the world. The problem is that he refuses to get out of the tent. Today is the day his process begins.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS:

AUGUST is 18 years old. White. Frail and somewhat pathetic-looking but possessing a quiet charisma. Unconventional face. Client at a young adult wilderness rehabilitation program. Clearly been through some emotional struggles, though is from a wealthy family. Unloved and lacking in self-respect.

NOTES ON AUGUST:

You would rather be anywhere else, instead of where you are right now. You’d rather be anyone other than who you are right now. It’s as if you’ve woken up from a dream and found yourself in this strange program, where your life is only just beginning. You’re uncomfortable all of the time. Your Dad left when you were young, and your Mom died a couple of years ago. You carry a picture of you and her around in your pocket everywhere you go. You’re not able to let her fade into the past. You’ve been living with your aunt and uncle for the last two years, holed up in your room smoking weed and playing video games. There’s part of you which understands that this doesn’t make for any kind of a life, that you’ll need to change yourself somehow and grow up, but you don’t quite have the strength or support to do it. Your aunt got frustrated one day and threw your console in the trash, so you pushed her down the stairs. That’s when she sent you to this program. This program is your wakeup call, your chance to change, but you fight the process every step of the way.

JUSTIN is 30 years old. Ethnicity non-specific. Counselor at a young adult wilderness rehabilitation program. Possesses well-grounded spirituality and empathy, maybe too much, though is not afraid to give someone hell. Sober. Has a dignity about him. Cares for the clients, despite them testing his patience. Comfortable in the woods.

NOTES ON JUSTIN:

You care for these guys. You’re sober, you’ve been through it yourself. But the clients are idiots for the most part, spoiled and entitled, always going wrong. They say and do some of the dumbest, most ignorant and inconsiderate things you could imagine, and you live with them for 8 days at a time. You’re constantly fighting to stay patient in spite of all they do to test you. Your struggle to not feel like you’re responsible for their behavior brings you high and low every day. They test you because you’re the only support and positive influence they’ve got. You’re a role model and are aware of that, but it’s often tough to live up to it. The relationship between you and them is overall a healthy one, but that means a heavy barrage of giving each other a hard time.

RALDY is 20 years old. Angry at the world. Skinny white kid from a wealthy suburb who talks and shows up like an inner-city gang member. Also a client at the wilderness rehabilitation program. Has been to multiple similar programs throughout his youth. Institutionalized.

NOTES ON RALDY:

From a wealthy family in Pinehurst, NC, a golfing community, but resents it. He never found himself there. He found his identity in gang culture. It’s what he relates to and how he sees himself and the world. “There is strength and weakness, a person is either weak or strong.” Those are the only terms in which he sees people. He doesn’t understand the irony of who he is; the fact that his parents have been paying for his life. They’ve been supporting him. This isn’t jail, it’s addiction treatment, and there’s a big difference. He’s an addict. Will do anything that lets him escape reality. Preference heroin. Doesn’t want to change, for him it’s all resistance and taking his power back wherever he can. Has a sociopathic streak. An inability to empathize. He lies constantly, to the point where he doesn’t even really recognize the truth. Has been in and out of treatment centers, programs, juvenile detention since 10. His parents don’t know what to do with him. Impulsive and does whatever he wants. Had stretches of being homeless, and uses this to bolster his self-image of being “hard”. Makes sure everybody knows it.
