BETTY SLAGLE: Caucasian, Female, 30′s – 40′s A single mother, Betty’s world centers around her pretty but demanding 15-year-old daughter, Tayloe.  Proud of Tayloe’s popularity and beauty, Betty works tirelessly to ensure that Tayloe is pleased even if it means asking Ave Maria’s elderly mother to re-stitch a costume.  No matter Tayloe’s shortcomings, Betty will always remain her biggest fan and most loyal supporter. SUPPORTING

PEARL GRIMES: Mixed Race, Female, looks/plays 15 – 17 years old A sweet and compassionate teenager who is an outcast amongst her fellow classmates, including Tayloe Slagle. Her generous heart and spark of southern wit is often overlooked due to her heavy frame, unkempt appearance and “Melungeon” background. Although poor, she is also intuitive, with a great deal of potential given the opportunity, Pearl finds an unlikely ally and mentor in Ave Maria Mulligan. SUPPORTING

EDNA TUCKETT: Caucasian, Female, 20′s – 30′s The pretty twin sister of Ledna Tuckett, Edna teaches high school in the nearby town of Coeburn but hopes to transfer to Big Stone Gap. SUPPORTING

LEDNA TUCKETT: Caucasian, Female. 20′s – 30′s The pretty twin sister of Edna Tuckett, Ledna is also a high school teacher in Coeburn but has her sights set on a job in Big Stone Gap, teaching theatre and music.

MARIO BARBARI: Caucasian, Male, Late 50′s-60′s, Speaks Italian. Ave Maria’s tall, elegant and handsome father. Mario is the personification of the perfect father even if he only found out he had a daughter 40 years after the fact. Kind, loving and instantly accepting of his position. His first act as her known father is to open his arms in a welcoming hug.  No looking back over lost time, Mario is ready to embrace the future as Ave Maria’s proud father. He loved her mother deeply and was sad to see her immigrate to the States. He definitely would have been there for her if he had only known.  Singing ability is a plus. CAMEO
